As China and Chinese communities across Europe celebrate Chinese New Year this weekend London's Green MEP, Jean Lambert sends her best wishes for a happy and peaceful new year.
Jean who is Vice President of the Green Group in the European Parliament said: "I would like to wish a Happy New Year to Chinese People all around the world. To those in China, in particular I would like to wish a happy and peaceful new year with the development of democracy, human rights and a clean and safe environment.
"Chinese New Year reminds us all just how important our family and friends are and stresses the importance of family ties. It also gives us the opportunity to turn over a new leaf. With this in mind I hope the year of the Dog will see the Chinese Government ensuring the safety and protection of human rights for Chinese people everywhere.
"The recent written declaration passed in the European Parliament,
requesting that the Chinese Government initiate a countrywide ban over the farming
of bear bile by the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, has made the first step forward
to address China's ethical standards and I hope this continues for many years
