Green Euro MP Jean Lambert has today called on the UK Government to immediately end all arms sales to Turkey as an Emergency Motion was passed at the Green Party Autumn Conference in Brighton today.
Jean, who has been awarded for her work on Justice and Human Rights continues to work closely with Kurds both in Turkey and throughout the UK. Speaking after the vote, which saw the emergency motion passed unanimously, Jean said she wanted to see a move to fair and just treatment for all in Turkey and demanded a retrial of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
Jean commented; "The Turkish Government has completely failed to follow up on the promise given to the Kurds by Prime Minister Erdogen in August 2005 where it was stated that more democracy, and not repression, was the answer to their long running grievances.
"Adding further to our concerns has been the Turkish Governments refusal to comply with the Judgment of the European Human Rights which called for a retrial of Abdullah Ocalan following the manifest unfairness of his original trial.
"Everyone has the right to fair and just treatment and whilst the Green
Party deplores violent action against civilians, whether by the Turkish authorities
or by groups claiming to represent the Kurds, I call on the UK Government to
take action. To make real progress however, we need an immediate ceasefire and
cessation of military build up on both sides."
