Green MEP Urges UK Government To Address NHS Deficits On Nurses Day 2006

As the world celebrates Nurses' Day tomorrow (May 12th 2006) Euro MP Jean Lambert has praised the dedication and invaluable care nurses give to the profession but spoke out against the recent cuts in the NHS that could seriously damage patient care.

Today Jean, who is London's Green MEP, gave her support to the nurses taking part in a mass lobby of parliament urging the Prime Minister to address the deficits in the NHS. Jean said; "Nurses Day gives us all a chance to acknowledge the vital work nurses around the world do. They all play an important role in ensuring everyone receives the best care possible but this will be seriously affected by staffing cuts. Not only will nurses lose their jobs and their own income but standards in the NHS will gradually fall where nurses are stretched to the limit under immense pressure.

"Sadly the current situation has reached a desperate state where even student nurses graduating from college after three years of training have no job to go to. Nurses need more time to treat each patient as a 'whole person' by listening and identifying the wider cause of the illness but this can only be done when wards and community services are fully staffed.

"Those in the nursing profession are passionate about their jobs. It's heartbreaking for them to see that their dedication and skills are needed yet the resources for employment are simply not there. I hope the Government listens to the mass lobby today and give us all an even bigger reason to celebrate nurses day tomorrow."

Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th each year marking the birth date of Florence Nightingale. School visits, open days and work place socials are just a few of the events taking place tomorrow to celebrate the day.
